Orpheus and Eurydice
Orpheus, a kind, extremely talented musician fell in love with beautiful Eurydice. The two were soon married and were very happy.
Immediately after their wedding, tragedy struck. Eurydice went outside with her bridesmaids and was bitten by a snake. She died instantly. Orpheus was left heartbroken and vowed to find a way to bring her back. He set off to find Hades.
Orpheus enchants Hades and all of his guards with his beautiful music. Hades says he can have Eurydice is he does not look at her while they leave the underworld. The two set off. He longs to look back at his bride, but he doesn't.
They're almost out when Orpheus sneaks a peek at Eurydice. She disappears and is gone forever. Orpheus is left heartbroken and spends the rest of his days sadly playing his music.
Ceyx and Alcyone
Ceyx and Alcyone were a king and queen who were deeply in love. Ceyx decided to journey one day out in the sea. Alycone cautioned him not to, for it was very dangerous. He decided to go anyway, and he bid farewell.
Alcyone drowns in a boat accident. He goes down crying out his love's name. Meanwhile, Ceyx prays to the goddess Juno constantly for her husband's safety. The goddess is touched and has the god of sleep appear to Ceyx. He tells Ceyx that her husband has drowned.
Ceyx runs out to the water. She finds her love's dead body floating in the water. She leaps into the water crying out for her husband.
Instead of falling into the water, the couple turns into birds. The two happily fly off, and can still be seen today, exploring the sky together.
Pyramus and Thisbe
Pyramus and Thisbe lived on opposite sides of a wall. Living in close proximity, the two fell deeply in love. Their parents forbade them from seeing each other. They used a small hole in the wall to talk to each other. One day, they decided to finally meet up at night.
Thisbe went to meet her lover and found a lioness there. She quickly fled, but accidentally left her cape there.
Pyramus finds his love's cape covered in blood and the lion's footprints. He assumes Thisbe has been killed and kills himself in misery. Thisbe returns and realizes the misunderstanding. She kills herself so they can never be parted.
